While our efforts to improve the News plant by the formation of g, stock .company w’ith shares of $10 each was not successful, it y^’^s a source of much satisfaa- tion. The many expressions of sympatliy an4 regard which were received, as well as the iflorp substantial offerings, are gjarlfs of cpn/j4l^,nppifi.Qur ability to conduct a satisfactory news paper that we shall ever remem ber with gratitud^. We believe tha,t tj?e present arrangern.ep|:;^ with only two iji th^ is much miQrp advantageous to us than wp.uld have been a dozen or a hundred to please. Nearly all the great papers o^ the pountry' are owned by stoclf: cpijjp.^rjies, and while tl)e News is not yet a^ Too Mui We are credit that on a recent appointment at Tox M. pouglas, pastor i byterl.sift chijrch at B accosted by a leading the Baptist church in ity and informed thav appointments there wpi} tolerated, and that which he had beep would not be longer open congregation. Mr. Dougli ferred the matter to his hpc of the day and they urged hii piake another appointm which he did. Reports are ble to exaggeration by repetitii and this statement may not b abspjutely accurate in every par ticular, but something of this kind has occurred, and this gives §.n outsider the opportunity for a few rem^rk§. The News has ever bean a friend to the churches, and is seajiy at all times to lend its aid tp any wQrlj the good pf hu- r^anity, but iii the present en- ightened condition of the wprid and in this free and liberal coun- itry where the right to “worship God according to the dictates of your own conscience” is a right guaranteed by the constitution, risas to rem=irk that no one church has a monopoly of all the religion in the wOrld.
